Kolkata Rainfall: 10 People Affected And Schools Closed

Kolkata heavy rains

Record rainfall in Kolkata and nearby districts resulted in 10 fatalities, eight in the city and two in North and South 24 Parganas, mainly due to electrocution. The city experienced its heaviest rain in 37 years, causing major disruption to transport and public services.

Schools will remain closed for two days, and Durga Puja events have been canceled. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain due to a Bay of Bengal low-pressure system.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim reported over 300 mm of rain in just five hours, which overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems.
