Shillong, Meghalaya, India:  A major tragedy has struck the political landscape of Meghalaya following the sudden demise of Ricky Andrew J Singhkan, Member of Parliament from Shillong and a prominent leader of the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP).

According to reports, Singhkan collapsed on Thursday evening while playing football with friends at a ground in Mawyong, near Mavlai. Those present immediately rushed him to the Mawyong Community Health Centre for emergency medical assistance.

He was later shifted to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Shillong for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, he passed away while undergoing treatment.

Singhkan, who held a PhD in Economics, previously served as a faculty member at North-Eastern Hill University before entering active politics. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024 and emerged as a strong opposition voice in the state.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and several political leaders expressed deep condolences over his untimely demise, describing it as an irreparable loss to the state’s political fraternity.

His sudden passing has left the people of Shillong and the wider political community in shock.
