MP Government Points to Increased Market Rates for Decline in Wheat Procurement

In 2021, Madhya Pradesh achieved record-high wheat procurement in India, totaling 12.5 million tonnes (MT). However, by 2024, the state saw a sharp decline, with procurement dropping to 4.8 MT, marking a significant decrease from the previous year's 7.1 MT despite a slight decrease in production from 22.41 MT to 21.21 MT.

This decline is unique among Indian states. The decrease in government procurement has been attributed to increased direct sales to private buyers by farmers.

Market data from the state's 175 grain markets indicated a reduction of 500,000 tonnes in wheat sales compared to the previous year.
