Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Chenab Railway Bridge, the tallest railway bridge in the world, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in height. Constructed for Rs 46,000 crore, the bridge was dedicated to the nation on Friday. Additionally, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi flagged off the Vande Bharat train service from Katra to Srinagar, a route set to enhance tourism in the area.
The 1,315-meter-long Chenab Bridge is designed to withstand harsh weather, including winds up to 260 km/h and earthquakes (zone 5). Built using 30,000 tonnes of steel, it holds the record as the tallest railway arch bridge in the world. Construction began in 2002 and was completed in 2022 as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail line project.
