IIT Guwahati student death protests
On Monday, IIT Guwahati reported that a third-year BTech student was found dead in his hostel room, marking the second such death on campus within a month. The deceased, a 21-year-old from Uttar Pradesh enrolled in the Computer Science and Engineering program, was discovered by police in the morning. The body has been sent for a post-mortem, and an investigation into the circumstances of the death is underway.
Following the incident, students gathered in large numbers outside the administrative building to protest. They alleged that academic pressures contributed to their fellow student’s death.
Students expressed frustration, noting that the deceased was among those who had failed a course due to attendance issues and were consequently restricted from internships, adding to his distress. Protesters called for the administration to address their concerns and take responsibility, criticizing the lack of response after a similar incident a month earlier.
In response, the IIT Guwahati administration assured that it is working closely with the police and reaffirmed its commitment to creating a supportive environment. They highlighted the availability of extended counseling support for students and stressed their dedication to prioritizing mental health and well-being during these challenging times.
This latest tragedy follows the death of a 23-year-old MTech student from Uttar Pradesh, who was found dead in her hostel room on August 9.
