Marco Rubio on Iran regime
Washington, D.C., USA: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio underscored the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership prospects if Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were to be removed, as tensions with Tehran escalate and a U.S. naval deployment to the Middle East draws international attention.
Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio addressed queries about possible outcomes following regime change in Iran, stating that there are no clear answers about who would take power. He described the Iranian political system as a complex structure dominated by Khamenei and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, making any transition unpredictable. Rubio’s remarks came amid growing concerns about Iranian capabilities and potential threats to U.S. forces stationed in the region.
Rubio also defended the increased U.S. military presence in the Middle East, noting that tens of thousands of American troops across multiple facilities could be within range of Iranian missiles and drones, necessitating a robust defensive posture. While reiterating hopes that diplomatic efforts can avert conflict, he acknowledged the risks involved in navigating Iran’s internal dynamics.
The heightened tension follows President Donald Trump’s announcement that a large naval fleet — including a carrier strike group — has been dispatched toward the region to deter hostile actions and protect U.S. interests. Tehran has urged restraint but has warned it will defend itself decisively if attacked
