Southwest Monsoon Arrives Early In India After 16 Years

Kerala monsoon

The southwest monsoon reached Kerala on Saturday, marking its earliest arrival over the Indian mainland since May 23, 2009, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The southwest monsoon typically begins in Kerala around June 1, gradually spreading across India by early July and retreating by mid-October. Historical records since 1975 show the earliest arrival was on May 19, 1990—a rare deviation from the usual pattern.

The monsoon’s timing doesn’t directly affect total rainfall, which varies due to multiple factors. The IMD forecasts above-average rainfall for 2025 with no El Nino expected. Monsoon rains are vital for farming and the economy.
