Mamata Government Wins Relief as SC Cancels CBI Inquiry Into Bengal Teacher Posts
The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, overturned the Calcutta High Court’s decision for a CBI probe into the creation of additional teacher posts in West Bengal in 2022. The court found that the posts were created with proper consultations and the Governor’s approval, ruling out the need for judicial intervention.
Earlier, the High Court had declared the posts “illegal” and ordered a CBI investigation, including questioning state cabinet members. The Supreme Court dismissed this directive, clarifying that its ruling only concerns the CBI probe, not other aspects of the investigation.
These additional posts were created to absorb waitlisted candidates after the 2016 SSC recruitment scam, sparking allegations of protecting illegally appointed staff. The ruling offers relief to the Mamata Banerjee government.
