Tear Gas Fired At Farmers Protesting For MSP Guarantee In Haryana-Punjab Border

Tear gas was fired at farmers protesting at the Shambhu border on the Haryana-Punjab border as they began their 'Dilli Chalo' march on Friday. The farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Prices (MSP), farm loan waivers, and protection from rising electricity tariffs. The protest quickly escalated after farmers encountered multiple police barricades on National Highway 44. Videos showed tear gas canisters enveloping the crowd, with some elderly farmers being attended to by fellow protesters.

Over 100 farmers, who began their march to Delhi, clashed with police, despite Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's assurance in Parliament that the government is committed to purchasing crops at MSP. Tensions also rose as mobile internet was suspended in parts of Ambala district, and schools were closed in the area. The farmers' demand for a legal guarantee for MSP has been a central issue in their protests since 2020, with opposition parties supporting their cause.
