The buses were en route to Kisan Mahapanchayats in Khanauri (Punjab) and Tohana (Haryana). The accidents occurred between 9 am and 10 am, with zero visibility due to fog.

The deceased are Sarabjit Kaur Kothaguru, Jasbir Kaur, and Balbir Kaur. One bus carrying 52 members of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Ugrahan from Bathinda overturned at Handiyaya bypass in Barnala district, killing three passengers. The other three buses also encountered accidents, injuring many. The injured were taken to Civil Hospital, Barnala.

BKU Ugrahan leader Jagseer Singh Jhumba stated that the bus hit a road divider and overturned due to the dense fog, with five passengers reported to be in critical condition.
