Uttarakhand Rocked By 2.7 And 3.5 Magnitude Earthquakes, No Casualties

Uttarkashi Experiences 2.7 and 3.5 Magnitude Earthquakes

Two earthquakes struck Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, on Friday morning. The first, with a magnitude of 2.7, occurred at 7:41 am, followed by a 3.5-magnitude earthquake at 8:19 am. Both tremors were felt in various areas of the district, including the headquarters and Bhatwadi tehsil. The epicenter of the first quake was near Tiloth, and the second quake’s epicenter was in Dayara Bugyal, Bhatwadi tehsil. Fortunately, no damage or casualties have been reported.

These earthquakes come shortly after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Myanmar, near the Manipur border, at 12:53 am on the same day. Uttarakhand, located in seismic zones IV and V, regularly experiences tremors due to the region’s tectonic activity from the rising Himalayas.

Uttarkashi district has seen several recent quakes, including a magnitude 3.0 quake in September 2023 and smaller tremors in January and May 2024. The area was also hit by a significant 6.8 magnitude earthquake in October 1991, known as the Garhwal earthquake.
