Originally from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, Mantena moved to the United States during the 1980s. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science & Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) and later pursued clinical pharmacy studies at the University of Maryland.
