Apple Watch hypertension feature
Apple has introduced its Hypertension Notifications feature to Apple Watch users in India, adding the country to the list of markets receiving the capability. The tool first became available with the watchOS 26 update launched in September. It evaluates long-term heart data collected from the watch and alerts the user if it detects consistent indicators of chronic high blood pressure. According to Apple, this assessment is carried out across a continuous 30-day period from the time the user activates the feature.
How to Enable Hypertension Notifications on Apple Watch
Before turning on the feature, users must check whether it is supported in their region. Hypertension Notifications are compatible with the Apple Watch Series 9 and later, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer models, all running watchOS 26. An accompanying iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 is also required.
Apple also specifies the following conditions:
- Wrist Detection must be turned on.
- Users should be at least 22 years old.
- They must not be pregnant.
- They should not have an existing hypertension diagnosis.
Steps to activate the feature:
- Open the Health app on your iPhone and tap your profile photo.
- Go to the Health Checklist under the Features section and choose Hypertension Notifications.
- Confirm your age and respond to the question about previous hypertension diagnosis, then tap Continue.
- Press Next and follow the instructions that explain how the feature functions.
- Tap Done to complete the setup on your Apple Watch.
If the watch generates a notification, it means that over the past month, the system has detected patterns in heart readings that may be related to elevated blood pressure. Apple recommends consulting a healthcare professional for an accurate blood pressure check.
The watch may also encourage users to maintain a Blood Pressure Log using a third-party BP cuff for tracking measurements over seven days.
How the Hypertension Feature Works
Apple notes that high blood pressure is the most significant controllable risk factor for conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, and kidney disorders. Despite affecting an estimated 1.3 billion adults worldwide, it often goes unidentified due to the absence of obvious symptoms.
The Apple Watch uses its optical heart sensor to evaluate how blood vessels react to each heartbeat. Its algorithm runs quietly in the background, reviewing the readings collected over 30 days. A notification is issued only when the device identifies a consistent pattern indicative of possible hypertension.
Apple emphasises that these alerts are meant to offer insight and encourage users to seek timely medical advice or adopt healthier habits. However, the feature is not designed to diagnose, treat, or manage hypertension, nor does it detect conditions like blood clots, arrhythmias, heart failure, or high cholesterol. Moreover, not every individual with hypertension will necessarily receive an alert.
Apple further clarifies that the Apple Watch cannot detect heart attacks. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as chest discomfort, pressure, or tightness should seek emergency assistance immediately.
