Chennai: Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up about the emotional and mental challenges that led to his retirement from the Indian Premier League, shedding light on a deeply personal decision that has sparked widespread discussion.
The former Chennai Super Kings cricketer revealed that the 2025 IPL season was one of the most difficult phases of his career. Despite still being physically capable of playing, Ashwin admitted that mental exhaustion played a crucial role in his decision to step away from the tournament.
He stated that reflecting on the previous season brings disappointment, making it difficult for him to revisit those moments. Ashwin emphasized that his retirement was a personal choice, but also one that could benefit the franchise. By stepping aside, he noted, the team avoids retention dilemmas and gains financial flexibility, potentially saving around ₹10 crore.
Meanwhile, CSK’s performance in IPL 2026 has come under scrutiny, with the team losing its first three matches and facing criticism from fans and experts alike.
Ashwin also shared his perspective on team management and the development of young players. He stressed that expecting immediate results without providing proper training, match exposure, and a competitive environment is not a sustainable approach.
Highlighting tactical concerns, Ashwin pointed out that bowlers should be utilized according to their strengths. He cited examples of players being pushed into roles that do not suit their natural abilities, which can ultimately harm team performance. Instead, he advocated for better player development and strategic clarity to improve results.
