Indian Embassy advisory in Mexico
Mexico: The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued a security advisory urging Indian nationals to remain indoors and avoid areas witnessing law enforcement activity following reports of heightened violence across several regions.
The advisory, released on February 22, comes in the wake of a military operation that reportedly resulted in the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as “El Mencho.” His reported death has triggered tensions and retaliatory incidents in parts of the country.
The development is being viewed in the backdrop of intensified anti-cartel operations under President Claudia Sheinbaum, amid growing pressure from the United States to curb the production and trafficking of synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl.
In its official statement, the embassy noted that ongoing security operations have led to road blockages and sporadic criminal activity in certain regions. Indian nationals residing in Jalisco (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (including Reynosa and surrounding municipalities), as well as parts of Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon, have been advised to shelter in place until further notice.
The embassy further urged Indian citizens to avoid areas near security operations, limit non-essential movement, remain vigilant, monitor local media updates, and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities.
In case of emergency, individuals are advised to dial 911, avoid large gatherings, and maintain regular communication with family and friends regarding their safety and whereabouts.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
