Strong Earthquake Strikes Naples: Panic, Damage, and Aftershocks Reported

Strong Earthquake Strikes Naples

A powerful earthquake struck near Pozzuoli in Naples at 01:25 AM local time, forcing residents to rush into the streets, with many spending the night in their cars. According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake's epicenter was in the Campi Flegrei area, at a depth of three kilometers near the town of Pozzuoli. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a minor tremor of 4.2 magnitude at a depth of ten kilometers.

Before the earthquake, a loud noise was heard, creating widespread panic across the Campania region. Witnesses reported strong tremors and temporary power outages in some areas. In Pozzuoli, a woman was rescued after part of her house collapsed. In the Bagnoli district, emergency teams worked overnight to free people trapped inside buildings, with some escaping through windows. A rescue coordination center has been set up to assess damage and provide assistance.

At least two aftershocks followed the main earthquake, raising concerns over further seismic activity. To allow for safety inspections, authorities ordered the closure of schools in Pozzuoli, Bagnoli, and Bacoli on Thursday. Bacoli Mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione urged residents to stay calm and follow official updates. Naples is located above the Campi Flegrei caldera, a high-risk volcanic zone with over half a million residents. The last eruption occurred in 1538, but seismic activity has increased in recent decades due to underground geological movements.
