Update Aadhaar Mobile Number
Changing the mobile number linked to an Aadhaar card is set to become significantly easier, bringing major relief to millions of Aadhaar holders across the country. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced the launch of a new feature that allows users to update their registered mobile number online, eliminating the need to visit Aadhaar enrollment centres.
This new service will be officially launched on January 28, 2026, and the announcement was made during the UIDAI Day celebrations. The initiative aims to enhance convenience and accessibility for Aadhaar cardholders, especially those who face difficulties visiting physical centres due to distance, age, or mobility challenges.
At present, Aadhaar mobile number updates require individuals to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and complete biometric verification. With the introduction of this new digital system, users will be able to update their mobile numbers remotely using their smartphones. This change is expected to save time, reduce overcrowding at Aadhaar centres, and provide quicker access to essential services.
Linking an active mobile number with Aadhaar is critical, as OTP-based authentication is mandatory for accessing various government schemes, subsidies, banking services, and digital platforms. Failure to update mobile numbers can lead to disruptions in welfare benefits, financial transactions, and ration services. UIDAI’s decision is expected to prevent such issues and ensure uninterrupted access to essential services.
The move also aligns with the broader objectives of the Digital India initiative. Elderly citizens, persons with disabilities, and residents of remote regions often face challenges in travelling to Aadhaar centres. For them, the online mobile number update facility will serve as a significant benefit, enabling self-management of Aadhaar details with greater transparency.
The mAadhaar mobile application will play a crucial role in facilitating this service. Available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the app allows users to securely update Aadhaar-related information. UIDAI has emphasized that robust security measures have been implemented to prevent data misuse and ensure user privacy.
As Aadhaar continues to function as a backbone of India’s digital ecosystem—supporting services such as PAN linking, income tax filing, and passport applications—keeping mobile numbers updated is increasingly important. With the rollout of this new feature from January 28, citizens are advised to verify their Aadhaar details and take advantage of the simplified process.
