IPL 2026 Update: Rohit Sharma to Play Full Role, Not Impact Player for MI

Rohit Sharma training with Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2026

Cricket fans across the country are eagerly awaiting the start of the IPL 2026 season, scheduled to begin on March 28. The opening fixture will see Bengaluru take on Hyderabad, setting the stage for another exciting edition of the tournament.

Ahead of the new season, Mumbai Indians supporters have received encouraging news regarding star opener Rohit Sharma. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene has clarified that the franchise has no plans to use Rohit as an ‘impact player’ this season and intends to field him as a regular member of the playing XI.

Addressing Rohit’s recent absence from T20 cricket, Jayawardene stated that the veteran batter has been putting in significant effort during training. He noted that Rohit joined the camp from day one and has shown impressive form in the nets, appearing fitter and highly committed.

Jayawardene also highlighted that Rohit’s presence brings immense value to the team, both on and off the field. He acknowledged that minor injuries last season led to Rohit being used as an impact player, but confirmed that the team plans to keep him actively involved on the field for most matches this year.

The coach further added that Mumbai Indians have a strong lineup of all-rounders, and the use of the impact player will depend on match conditions.

Mumbai Indians are set to begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29.
