T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka Appoints Lasith Malinga as Consultant Bowling Coach

T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka Cricket Board Makes Strategic Coaching Move

The Sri Lanka Cricket has announced a significant step as preparations intensify for the T20 World Cup 2026. Former India fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been appointed to the national setup as a consultant pace and bowling coach. His tenure will run from December 15 through January 25.

With the T20 World Cup 2026 drawing closer and scheduled to begin on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the cricket board opted to leverage Malinga’s vast experience in the shortest format. The decision reflects a focused effort to strengthen Sri Lanka’s bowling unit ahead of the global event.

Malinga stated that his role will center on sharpening skills for crucial phases of the game, including death-over bowling and strategies to control aggressive batters. He emphasized training fast bowlers in varied techniques to improve effectiveness under pressure. Previously, Malinga has served as a bowling coach in the Indian Premier League with franchises such as Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals.

Sri Lanka lifted the T20 World Cup title in 2014 but has failed to progress to the knockout rounds in the last three editions. In the upcoming tournament, the team will compete in the group stage against Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe, aiming to reclaim past success.
