Why Did Lokpal Order 7 BMW Cars? Public, Experts Slam the Decision

Lokpal Faces Backlash Over Purchase of BMW Cars

The Lokpal — an institution established to eliminate corruption in the nation — has now found itself at the center of controversy. The anti-corruption body, created to investigate misconduct by government officials and public representatives, has reportedly decided to procure seven BMW 3 Series cars. According to reports, tenders have been issued for these premium vehicles, each costing nearly ₹70 lakh. This move has raised eyebrows among citizens who question whether a corruption watchdog should be spending public funds on luxury cars instead of setting an example of simplicity and accountability.

Prominent lawyer Prashant Bhushan strongly condemned the development. He alleged that “the Modi government has dismantled the integrity of the Lokpal by appointing loyalists and now the institution is indulging in extravagance using taxpayers’ money.” Bhushan further argued that the Lokpal’s primary duty is to combat corruption among officials, not to spend crores of rupees on lavish purchases. Such actions, he warned, could damage the credibility and impartiality of the institution.

Public sentiment seems to echo similar concerns. The decision has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning the moral grounds of an anti-corruption body choosing luxury vehicles for official use. Analysts point out that institutions funded by citizens’ taxes should practice transparency and austerity, not opulence. Amid this uproar, discussions have reignited over the autonomy and accountability of the Lokpal, with several voices demanding a review of its spending priorities.
