China Accuses Philippine Vessel Deliberate Collision with Chinese Ship
China’s Coast Guard reported on Monday that a Philippine vessel, which had previously been warned multiple times, "deliberately collided" with a Chinese ship in a manner deemed "unprofessional and dangerous." Following this incident, the same Philippine vessel reportedly entered waters near Second Thomas Shoal after being denied access to Sabina Shoal.
According to Gan Yu, a spokesperson for China’s Coast Guard, two Philippine Coast Guard ships "illegally intruded" into waters adjacent to Sabina Shoal in the early hours of Monday. Gan accused the Philippines of provoking tensions and violating temporary agreements between the two nations, referring to the Philippines' resupply missions to a vessel grounded at Second Thomas Shoal.
China’s Coast Guard asserted that it took legal control measures against the Philippine ships and warned the Philippines to "immediately cease infringement and provocations" or face the consequences.
In July, China and the Philippines reached a "provisional agreement" following repeated clashes near Second Thomas Shoal. Beijing faces significant criticism from Western nations for obstructing Philippine resupply efforts to a navy ship intentionally grounded 25 years ago.
China claims nearly the entire South China Sea, including both shoals, and dismisses a 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling which found that Beijing’s extensive claims lack legal grounding under international law.
