Hyderabad–Vijayawada Highway
Andhra Pradesh, India: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced major upgrades to the six-lane expansion project on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National Highway, aiming to reduce rising accident rates in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Authorities are taking corrective steps to avoid the mistakes that occurred during the earlier four-lane construction phase.
Underpasses Planned at All Key Junctions
To enhance safety for two-wheelers and pedestrians crossing the busy highway, NHAI has decided to construct underpasses at all major intersections. The Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared by Icons, proposes a total of 60 underpasses, which has already been submitted for approval.
The project covers a stretch of 231.32 km, starting from Dandumalkapuram in Yadadri district and extending up to the Kanakadurgamma flyover in Vijayawada. The proposed infrastructure includes:
- 60 Underpasses
- 17 Vehicular Underpasses (VUPs)
- 35 Light Vehicular Underpasses (LVUPs)
- 8 Small Vehicular Underpasses
- 10 Foot Overbridges (FOBs)
Work has already begun in several high-risk zones where accidents are frequently reported.
Correcting Flaws from the Previous Expansion
The earlier four-lane highway had developed several accident-prone spots due to irregular modifications, political interference, and improper planning. Acknowledging these issues, NHAI has now devised a more robust and structured plan to prevent such problems during the six-lane upgrade.
Expected Benefits
- With the increased number of underpasses and pedestrian bridges, the following improvements are anticipated:
- Safer crossing options for pedestrians
- Reduced traffic congestion
- A notable decrease in road accidents
These measures collectively aim to create a safer and more efficient travel experience along the Hyderabad–Vijayawada corridor.
