NH-16 Road: Faster highway access to Amaravati
The Andhra Pradesh government is actively working to improve highway connectivity to Amaravati. Construction activity on the E-13 road, which links Amaravati with the Chennai–Kolkata National Highway NH-16, has picked up pace. Initially, the E-13 alignment was planned only between Nekkallu and Yarrabalem. However, authorities have now approved its extension up to NH-16.
The new link from Amaravati will merge with NH-16 near the DGP office, located between Vijayawada and Mangalagiri. The distance between Yarrabalem and National Highway 16 measures approximately 3.54 kilometers. While a six-lane roadway is already under construction along the 7.5-kilometer stretch from Nekkallu to Yarrabalem, the government has decided to extend the route further from Yarrabalem to NH-16 once capital region development resumes in 2024.
This additional segment is estimated to cost Rs 384 crore and is expected to be completed within one year.
Design features and structures
As per the approved road design, the first 400 meters from Yarrabalem will be developed on a steep gradient. This will be followed by a 960-meter elevated corridor supported by pillars, enabling smooth vehicular movement. Next, a 76-meter-long Rail Over Bridge will cross the railway track.
Beyond the ROB, another elevated stretch measuring 405 meters will be built, followed by a 741-meter ghat road along the hill terrain. To manage the undulating landscape, a 560-meter elevated corridor will span the valley, after which a 230-meter hill road section will be constructed. The alignment will then continue as a 360-meter sloping road leading directly to the national highway.
To facilitate seamless entry onto NH-16, a flyover rising 5.5 meters in height will be built, ending with a trumpet interchange. Once this trumpet structure is completed, commuters traveling from Guntur to Amaravati and from Amaravati toward Vijayawada will be able to access the national highway conveniently through dedicated service roads.
