Supreme Court Slams UP Govt Over Illegal Demolitions, Orders Compensation

Supreme Court UP demolitions

The Supreme Court criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and Prayagraj Development Authority for the illegal demolitions of homes in Prayagraj in 2021, including those of a lawyer and a professor. The Court ordered Rs 10 lakh compensation for each affected individual within six weeks, calling the actions "insensitive" and a violation of the right to shelter under Article 21 of the Constitution. The demolitions were based on a mistaken belief that the land belonged to gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed. The petitioners had challenged the demolitions after the Allahabad High Court rejected their plea.
