The Indian couple who died in the Canadian police chase were from Tamil Nadu

The Indian embassy in Toronto has identified an Indian couple who died in an accident with their granddaughter earlier this week when Canadian police chased a liquor store robbery suspect who drove the wrong way. The Consulate General of India in Toronto posted on Friday, Deeply condoling the tragic loss of Indian nationals Mr Manivannan, Ms Mahalakshmi and their granddaughter in the Highway 401 accident.

The Consulate General visited the victim's family at the hospital and assured them of all possible assistance. We are in touch with the Canadian authorities, the post said.

A couple from Tamil Nadu went on a trip to Canada. The couple's three month old grandson also died in the accident. The Ontario Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said Thursday that Highway 401 was closed for several hours after the incident on Monday. CBC News previously reported that the 21 year old robbery suspect was also killed in the crash, which involved at least six vehicles.

Four people died in the accident on Highway 401 in Whitby, 50 kilometres east of Toronto. The SIU said that a 60 year old man and a 55 year old woman had come from India. However, the names of the victims have not been disclosed. The baby's parents, his 33 year old father and 27 year old mother were traveling in the same vehicle and rushed to the hospital. SI said that the mother's injuries were serious. The car chase, which began with a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville, led Durham police on a high speed chase against oncoming traffic on Highway 401 about 20 minutes after the suspect in a cargo van, officials said. A 38 year old male passenger in the cargo van was also seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
