San Diego, California, USA: Indian-American space scientist Amit Kshatriya currently holds a senior leadership role at NASA and has emerged as a key figure behind the successful completion of the Artemis II mission — a crucial milestone in the agency’s renewed human lunar exploration efforts.
The Artemis II mission, a crewed lunar flyby, concluded successfully with astronauts returning safely after splashdown off the coast of San Diego, California, at 8:07 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday. The mission marks a significant advancement in NASA’s broader Artemis programme aimed at returning humans to the Moon.
Kshatriya currently serves as Associate Administrator and Senior Advisor to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. Reflecting on the mission’s success, he highlighted both the achievement and the challenges ahead, stating that while the path to the Moon is now open, the work ahead remains substantial.
Born in Brookfield and raised in Katy, Texas, Kshatriya developed an early interest in space exploration after witnessing rocket launches near Houston, home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He is the son of first-generation Indian immigrants.
He pursued studies in mathematics at the California Institute of Technology and the University of Texas at Austin. Before joining NASA, he worked across sectors including oil and gas and healthcare.
Kshatriya began his association with NASA’s contractor ecosystem in 2003, gradually taking on roles in spacecraft operations, robotics engineering, and International Space Station (ISS) assembly support. Between 2014 and 2017, he served as an ISS flight director, overseeing mission execution and global operations.
He later transitioned to NASA Headquarters in 2021, contributing to the Artemis programme and lunar exploration planning. His career progression saw him appointed as Deputy Associate Administrator for the Moon to Mars programme, before being elevated to Associate Administrator in September last year — one of the agency’s top civil service roles.
His contributions have been recognised with prestigious honours, including the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal and the Silver Snoopy Award for excellence in flight safety.
With Artemis II successfully completed, NASA is expected to continue advancing its lunar exploration roadmap, setting the stage for future deep-space missions under the Artemis programme.
