Formula One to Eliminate Fastest Lap Bonus Point Starting in 2025

Formula One fastest lap bonus point

This bonus reintroduced in 2019 after being briefly used in the 1950s, is awarded if the driver finishes in the top ten, and it can impact the overall standings in the 24-race season.

The announcement was made ahead of the United States Grand Prix and includes other changes to the 2024 and 2025 regulations approved by the World Motor Sport Council. Notably, the requirement to run a young driver during free practice will increase from once to twice per car per season.

The importance of the fastest lap was highlighted during last month’s Singapore Grand Prix, where Daniel Ricciardo, driving for RB (a sister team to Red Bull), pitted for fresh tires to secure the fastest lap in his final race. This move prevented McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was leading the fastest lap at that moment, from earning an additional point.
