Chandipura Virus Causes 14 Deaths in Gujarat

The Chandipura virus is creating havoc in several districts of Gujarat.

Chandipura virus is an RNA virus, typically spread by female Phlebotomine flies.

Aedes mosquitoes are responsible for its spread.

The virus emerged between 2004-2006 and in 2019 in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Gujarat has reported 27 suspected cases so far, with 14 deaths.

Suspected cases have been reported in 12 districts of Gujarat.

Out of the 27 cases, 24 are from Gujarat, while the remaining 3 came from other states.

The highest cases are reported in Sabarkantha and Aravalli.

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirmed Chandipura virus in a 4-year-old girl after testing samples from suspicious deaths.
