India US trade agreement discussions continue amid tariff ruling uncertainty
Delhi, New Delhi: India is currently adopting a cautious approach regarding the proposed trade agreement with the United States, and there are no immediate indications that the deal will be signed soon, according to sources.
The agreement had earlier been expected to be finalized within this month. However, officials now suggest that the central government may wait several more months before taking a final decision. The delay comes after a ruling by the US Supreme Court which declared tariffs imposed earlier by former US President Donald Trump to be invalid.
Following the court’s decision, discussions between the two countries have slowed, and no major negotiations have taken place recently.
Meanwhile, global developments have also added complexity to the situation. The United States has recently initiated military action against Iran, which has further influenced diplomatic and economic priorities.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi on Friday, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore stated that Washington still has multiple options when it comes to imposing tariffs on different countries.
“We expect the nations with which we have agreements to honour them,” he said, adding that the United States hopes India will also respect the commitments made in ongoing discussions.
Despite the current uncertainty, India’s Commerce Ministry clarified in a statement that negotiations regarding the trade agreement with the United States are still in progress and have not been halted.
Officials indicate that while the talks continue, India is carefully assessing the evolving global trade environment before making a final move on the agreement.
