India Iran maritime security talks amid Strait of Hormuz tensions
India on Wednesday held discussions with Iran on maritime and energy security amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi as attacks on merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz continue to raise concerns about global shipping safety.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the conversation focused on maritime security and ensuring stable energy supplies as tensions escalate in the region.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders discussed the safety of international shipping routes and the importance of maintaining uninterrupted oil supplies.
He noted that the foreign ministers of India and Iran have been in regular contact over the past few days to monitor developments related to maritime security.
“In recent days, there have been several conversations between the External Affairs Minister of India and the Foreign Minister of Iran. In our latest discussion, issues related to maritime security and India’s energy security were addressed,” Jaiswal said.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified during the ongoing conflict in West Asia, with attacks reported on multiple commercial vessels. These incidents have disrupted global shipping routes and raised concerns about energy supply chains.
Meanwhile, a Saudi oil tanker arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday carrying crude oil onboard a Liberian-flagged vessel. The shipment marked the first vessel to successfully cross the Strait of Hormuz since the escalation of hostilities.
Officials confirmed that approximately 1.35 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil were imported through the shipment.
