Jalaharati Corporation news update
In a significant move, the Andhra Pradesh government has made a key decision regarding the controversial Banakacharla link project, which has stirred debates across the Telugu states. To take this project forward, the government has established a dedicated entity named Jalaharati Corporation Limited.
Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has issued official orders for the formation of Jalaharati Corporation Limited, which will be headquartered in Vijayawada. This newly formed corporation will oversee the development of the Polavaram-Banakacharla link, along with other pending irrigation projects. The Water Resources Department has initiated the corporation's setup, assigning it the task of completing the Banakacharla project and similar infrastructure works across the state.
Strategic Move by AP Government
The Polavaram-Banakacharla project has sparked disputes between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with the Telangana government raising strong objections. While the Chandrababu Naidu-led government has approved the project, Telangana has accused Andhra of attempting to divert water meant for their state. In response, the AP government has established the Jalaharati Corporation to execute the Banakacharla project with the intention of utilizing the surplus Godavari water, which otherwise flows into the sea, to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of the Rayalaseema and Palnadu regions.
Fully Government-Funded Initiative
The newly formed institution, based in Amaravati, will be entirely funded by the Andhra Pradesh government. As per the official announcement, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will serve as the Chairman of the corporation, Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu will act as the Vice-Chairman, and the Chief Secretary will function as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The initiative underscores the state’s commitment to advancing its irrigation infrastructure despite inter-state concerns.
