Applied Materials Center of Excellence in Tamil Nadu
US-based semiconductor firm Applied Materials has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tamil Nadu Government to establish an advanced AI-enabled Center of Excellence in Chennai. This center will focus on semiconductor manufacturing and equipment, aiming to collaborate with local universities and industry partners to enhance the semiconductor ecosystem in Tamil Nadu and develop a skilled talent pool for the chip industry.
The MOU was signed in San Francisco with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Dr. Prabu Raja, President of Applied Materials' Semiconductor Products Group, present. Chief Minister Stalin highlighted that investments in advanced electronics and semiconductors are crucial for achieving Tamil Nadu's $1 trillion economy goal by 2030, aiming to position the state as South Asia's leading knowledge and innovation hub.
The Center will also strengthen Applied Materials' existing collaborations with Tamil Nadu's academic institutions, focusing on advancing research in AI, machine learning, and data science for the semiconductor sector. Dr. Raja emphasized Tamil Nadu's industrial prowess and scientific talent, expressing enthusiasm about expanding Applied Materials' presence in Chennai and advancing AI capabilities in the local semiconductor industry.
