From Actor to MP: Kamal Haasan Compares Rajya Sabha Win to Govt Job

Kamal Haasan Compares Rajya Sabha Election to Getting a Government Job at 71

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India: Actor and politician Kamal Haasan has recently been elected to the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of Parliament. Speaking about his election, Haasan expressed a sense of pride comparable to securing a government job at the age of 71. He shared that the moment made him think of his parents, whom he wished he could have informed immediately.

Kamal Haasan, the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), was addressing an event in Kerala when someone asked him about his feelings on becoming a Member of Parliament. Haasan responded that being elected felt like finally landing a government job after many years. He recalled how the thought of his parents came to mind at that instant.

“During that moment, I remembered my parents, D. Srinivasan Iyengar and Rajalakshmi. They had always envisioned a stable government job for me, even though I had left school early and didn’t complete my SSLC. My mother often said she hoped I would get a government position, maybe in the railways. Being elected to the Rajya Sabha at 71 felt like fulfilling that wish. I even wanted to call my mother immediately; it was a proud moment,” Haasan said.

On his political stance, Haasan described himself as a centrist. He also emphasized that his production house, Raj Kamal Films International, continues to support causes aligned with his principles. Haasan’s most recent film, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, did not receive the expected audience response.
