India welcomes US-Iran ceasefire and calls for peace in West Asia
India has officially responded to the recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, welcoming the development as a positive step toward restoring stability in West Asia.
In a statement shared on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for lasting peace in the region. The government reiterated its consistent stance that ongoing conflicts can only be resolved through de-escalation, sustained dialogue, and diplomatic engagement.
The MEA highlighted the significant human and economic toll caused by the prolonged tensions, noting that people in the region have endured considerable hardship over the past several weeks. It also pointed out that the conflict had disrupted global energy supplies and trade networks, raising concerns worldwide.
India further emphasized the importance of ensuring uninterrupted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil transportation. The government expressed optimism that the ceasefire agreement would prevent further disruptions in this vital corridor.
The tensions, which lasted for nearly 40 days, involved heightened hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The ceasefire announcement came after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that both sides had agreed to halt hostilities, with Iran also consenting to reopen key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
India concluded by reaffirming its support for peaceful resolutions and stability in the region, given its broader implications for global security and economic balance.
