Indian Origin Mother and Son create history as Mayors in Britain
A family from Haryana has made history in Britain after both a mother and son were elected as mayors in separate councils. Parveen Rani and her 23-year-old son Tushar Kumar, who moved from Rohtak to Britain in 2013, achieved the rare distinction within a span of one week.
Tushar Kumar was elected as the Mayor of the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, becoming the youngest mayor of Indian origin in Britain. A week later, his mother, Parveen Rani, was elected as the first mayor of Indian origin for the Hertsmere Borough Council.
The achievement has drawn attention from both the Indian and British communities, with many praising the family's contribution to public service and community leadership.
Speaking over the phone, Tushar's father, Sunil Dahiya, a businessman based in Britain, said he felt proud that both his wife and son were elected as mayors at the same time. He described it as a memorable moment for the family and the Indian community.
Tushar Kumar completed his degree from King's College London and is expected to finish his postgraduate studies in September this year. Despite his young age, he has already established himself in local public service and civic leadership.
The family's achievement is being celebrated as an inspiring success story for the Indian diaspora living abroad.
