Manipur CM N Biren Singh Resigns Amid Controversies And Ethnic Violence

Biren Singh Resigns as Manipur CM Ethnic Violence and BJP Dissent Lead to Decision

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025, amid internal BJP dissent and criticism of his handling of ethnic violence in the state. Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who accepted it along with his council of ministers.

His tenure was marked by ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which led to over 250 deaths and mass displacement. Despite public apologies and calls for reconciliation, his leadership faced continued scrutiny.

Before his resignation, Singh met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi amid allegations of his involvement in the unrest, including leaked audio suggesting he allowed groups to loot arms.

The Congress swiftly criticized Singh’s delayed resignation, and now there is uncertainty over whether a new chief minister will be appointed. Singh’s resignation is expected to aid peace efforts in the state, though BJP MLAs have reportedly lost confidence in his leadership. Opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, blamed PM Modi and the BJP for mishandling the crisis. The future political landscape in Manipur remains unclear.
