Mizoram Rain Havoc: Over 550 Landslides
Due to the influence of the southwest monsoon, the Northeastern States are experiencing continuous heavy rainfall. States like Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Meghalaya have been hit by relentless downpours, leading to widespread landslides. Around 34 people have died in rain-related incidents across these states. In Mizoram alone, five people lost their lives over the past ten days—three in Champhai district, and one each in Aizawl and Serchhip districts—due to landslides and sudden floods causing houses and walls to collapse.
Disaster Management officials reported that landslides occurred at 552 locations across Mizoram. A total of 152 houses were damaged, and 198 families had to evacuate their homes due to cracks and instability caused by the landslides. Champhai district, which borders Myanmar, was the worst affected, with 209 landslides, nine houses damaged, and 14 families evacuated. In Serchhip district, landslides occurred at 75 locations, damaging 27 houses and displacing 132 families due to cracks, floods, and landslide threats.
In Aizawl district, 18 landslides were reported, damaging 13 houses. Khawzawl saw 75 incidents, Lunglei had 60, and Siaha district in South Mizoram recorded 53 landslides. Except for Saitual district, all schools across the state were declared closed due to safety concerns. Over 100 trucks carrying essential supplies to southern districts were stranded in Serchhip. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 253.7 mm rainfall in Aizawl over the last three days, 248.33 mm in Khawzawl, and 241.5 mm in Siaha. The IMD forecast light to moderate rainfall across Mizoram for the next five days and urged people to stay alert.
