NASA Captures Breathtaking Image of Gigantic Jets Over Himalayas

NASA recently captured a series of rare gigantic jets above the Himalayas, emerging from a thunderstorm on the China-Bhutan border. These powerful lightning phenomena, extending from thunderstorm tops to the edge of space, are relatively new discoveries, bridging the gap between thunderstorms and the Earth's ionosphere.

The composite image, named NASA’s Astronomy Photo of the Day for June 18, showcases their complex structure, resembling both blue jets and red sprites. Despite ongoing research, the exact mechanisms behind gigantic jets remain mysterious, but they are known to balance electrical charges in the atmosphere.

Observing these events requires a clear view of distant, intense thunderstorms. This recent capture provides a fascinating glimpse into the rare and powerful nature of these atmospheric events.
