Railway Board revises porter rates
The Railway Board in Delhi has revised porter rates at all Central Railway (CR) stations. The new rates are effective immediately, with porters at major stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar Terminus, Thane, Kalyan, and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus now receiving Rs 85 per trip for handling up to 40 kilograms of luggage, up from the previous rate of Rs 40. At smaller stations, the new charge is Rs 75 for the same weight.
Despite this increase, some porters, like Anil Nagare from Dadar Terminus, have expressed dissatisfaction. He mentioned that the porter association was not consulted about the rate change and raised concerns about the declining demand for porter services.
This decline is attributed to the increased availability of lifts and escalators at stations and the growing use of wheeled luggage by passengers, which reduces the need for porters.
