Union Budget 2026
In a move unprecedented in the last 25 years, the Modi government has decided to present the Union Budget in Parliament on a Sunday. Why a Sunday budget? February 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday. ??Usually, if the budget date falls on a holiday, the tradition is to shift it to the previous or the following day. However, this time, the Finance Ministry has decided to break with this tradition and present the budget on the same day. ??Accordingly, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will deliver her budget speech in the Lok Sabha at 11 AM on Sunday.
It is also reported that discussions are underway regarding opening the stock markets on Sunday to immediately assess the budget's impact. If this is implemented, this day will become even more crucial for investors.
History Repeats Itself After 26 Years: Previously, in 1999, the then Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha presented the Union Budget on a Sunday. Now, after almost 26 years, the Modi government is bringing back a similar event. In this process, another significant record will be added to Nirmala Sitharaman's account. With this budget, she will become the first Finance Minister to present the Union Budget for the ninth consecutive time. She will create history as the first Finance Minister to present nine consecutive budgets, surpassing the records of prominent figures like Morarji Desai, Manmohan Singh, and P. Chidambaram.
