Manipur Lilong violence
The Thoubal district magistrate banned gatherings of five or more people and the carrying of weapons. Around 7,000–8,000 people reportedly attacked Ali’s residence in the Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei area with lathis and stones.
Ali had voiced support for the Waqf Act on social media on Saturday but later apologized and condemned the Act following the incident.
The district administration cited high tension and risk to public peace in Lilong. Protests erupted across Imphal Valley on Sunday, with over 5,000 people rallying on NH-102 in Lilong. Clashes with security forces were reported in Irong Chesaba and other areas including Kshatri Awang Leikai, Kairang Muslim, Kiyamgei Muslim, and Sora.
Security has been tightened in Muslim-majority areas.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, passed by Parliament last week and signed by President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday, aims to enhance transparency and protect Waqf properties, heritage sites, and stakeholder rights.
