Dalai Lamas Grammy Award: China has strongly condemned the Grammy Award conferred on Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, asserting that the recognition is being used to promote what it described as anti-China activities.
Responding to the development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the Dalai Lama should not be viewed as a purely religious figure. He claimed that the Tibetan leader is a political exile engaged in separatist activities under the guise of religion, and reiterated Beijing’s opposition to any international platform being used to challenge China’s sovereignty.
The Dalai Lama received the Grammy Awards for Best Audiobook, Narration and Storytelling Recording for his album Meditation. The award was announced during the 68th annual Grammy Awards ceremony held in California on Sunday. At the age of 90, the spiritual leader secured one of the most prestigious global recognitions in the arts.
China reiterated that it firmly opposes the use of cultural or international awards to promote political agendas against the country. Officials maintained that the issue of Tibet is an internal matter and warned against what they described as external interference.
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising and has since lived in exile in Dharamsala. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his advocacy of non-violence. Reacting to the Grammy recognition, he said he did not view it as a personal achievement, but as an opportunity to further spread messages of peace, compassion, environmental care, and human values for the welfare of humanity worldwide.
