Vijay Meets Families of Karur Stampede Victims in Mahabalipuram
Karur, Tamil Nadu, India: Tamil actor and Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay met with the families of those who lost their lives in the Karur stampede. The meeting took place on Monday at a private resort in Mahabalipuram, where tight security arrangements were made in and around the premises. During the visit, Vijay personally consoled the grieving families and distributed compensation to them.
The visit coincided with the one-month mark of the tragic Karur incident. On September 27, a stampede at a TVK rally in Karur claimed the lives of 41 people. Following the tragedy, Vijay had expressed his sorrow and promised assistance to the affected families. However, due to security and administrative restrictions, he had not been permitted to travel to Karur directly. Consequently, arrangements were made to bring the victims’ families to Mahabalipuram, where TVK reserved around 50 rooms at a resort to accommodate them. Each family received financial compensation and personal support from Vijay.
The Karur rally tragedy, often referred to as the Karur Stampede, sent shockwaves across the nation. Police have since arrested several individuals linked to TVK in connection with the case. Allegations of a possible conspiracy also emerged. TVK had petitioned the Madras High Court, seeking an independent inquiry into the incident. Initially, the court declined to permit it, but later, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed. Following directives from the Supreme Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case, which will be periodically reviewed by an oversight committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu government announced that no political gatherings will be allowed on highways until a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is implemented. Meanwhile, the state is gearing up for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for next year.
