At Least 34 Dead as Assam Faces Worst Floods in 132 Years
Assam has been severely affected by floods, with record-breaking rainfall not seen since 1893. Silchar recorded 415 mm of rain in 24 hours on June 1, surpassing the previous 132-year-old record of 290.3 mm. Roads and homes were submerged, with streams overflowing across the region.
The IMD says a trough system caused the heavy rains across the Northeast, leading to floods and landslides that killed at least 34 people in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and nearby areas.
Silchar had faced similar flooding in 2022 when the Barak River overflowed. Once again, much of the city is underwater. Other states like Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, and Sikkim have also faced intense rainfall in recent days. Mizoram alone saw 1,102% above-normal rainfall on May 31.
