Assam Reports 47,928 Illegal Immigrants Detected (1971-2014)

On Thursday, the Assam government reported that between 1971 and 2014, 47,928 individuals were deemed illegal immigrants in the state. This group comprises 20,613 Hindus, 27,309 Muslims, and six individuals from other religions. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also oversees home affairs, shared this information in response to a query from AGP MLA Ponakan Baruah in the state assembly.
Dr. Sarmas data reveals that among the identified Hindus, the majority of the 20,613 illegal immigrants were from Cachar district (8,139), followed by Guwahati city (2,884), Lakhimpur district (1,574), and Dibrugarh district (1,038). For the 27,309 Muslims flagged as illegal immigrants, significant numbers were from Jorhat district (4,182), Guwahati city (3,897), Dibrugarh district (2,829), Hojai district (2,100), Sivasagar district (2,096), Nagaon district (2,083), Cachar district (2,013), Lakhimpur district (1,710), and Morigaon district (1,172).
Under the Assam Accord, the deadline for detecting and deporting illegal migrants is set at midnight on March 24, 1971. Addressing concerns about the rising number of non-Assamese speakers and its effect on indigenous communities, Sarma assured that the administration is closely monitoring the situation. He cited the 2011 census, noting that Assamese-speaking individuals made up 48.38 percent of the states population of 3.12 crore, while Bengali-speaking people constituted 28.92 percent.
