Devastating Floods Ravage Northeast India
Floods are creating havoc in the northeastern states of India. In Assam, over 15 rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger level. As a result, several states are affected by floods, impacting around 7 lakh people. Heavy rains have destroyed numerous houses, and thousands have taken shelter in relief camps. So far, 43 people have lost their lives. Assam and Meghalaya are facing severe devastation, with the flood situation worsening. In Assam alone, 21 districts are under flood impact, affecting over 6.32 lakh people. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in 11 districts.
Road, rail, and ferry services have been badly affected. Due to the southwest monsoon, heavy rains are continuing in several areas. In Sikkim, landslides trapped 34 people, who were rescued by two Mi-17 V5 helicopters and brought to Pakyong airport. So far, 1,700 people have been rescued from different parts of the state. At Chaten in Lachen town, a landslide struck an army camp, leaving six soldiers missing. Search operations are ongoing. A 23-member NDRF team is conducting rescue efforts. Meanwhile, search is underway for eight people swept away with a vehicle into the Teesta river. In Meghalaya, NDRF personnel are searching for a tourist from Indore. Raja Raghuvanshi (29) died in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, while his wife Sonam is still missing. A 17-member NDRF team is searching for her. In the past 10 days, 552 landslides have occurred, killing five and damaging 152 houses.
In Assam, 165 relief camps and 157 relief distribution centers have been set up for affected people. A total of 31,212 people are currently staying in the camps. Meanwhile, floods are surging in Manipur as well, affecting 1.64 lakh people and damaging 35,143 houses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the flood situation with the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim and the Governor of Manipur. He assured all possible assistance. As per official data, due to floods and landslides in the northeastern states, 17 people died in Assam, 11 in Arunachal Pradesh, 6 in Meghalaya, 5 in Mizoram, 3 in Sikkim, and 1 in Tripura. Additionally, in Bihar’s Siwan district, 7 people died due to heavy rainfall.
