Near Butler, Bates County, Missouri, USA: An Indian-origin student was among the 12 people who lost their lives after a skydiving aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff near Butler, Missouri, on June 14, according to local authorities.
The victim was identified as Sai Karthik Varma Datla (24), a recent graduate of the University of Central Missouri, where he earned a master's degree in computer science.
Officials said the aircraft was carrying 11 skydivers and a pilot when it crashed moments after departure. The Bates County Coroner's Office released the names of the victims on June 16.
Datla moved to the United States in January 2023 to pursue higher education and build a successful career. According to a fundraiser organized by family friend Someswara Rao Kola, he had recently completed his master's degree and aspired to support his family and provide them with a brighter future.
The fundraiser described him as a hardworking, compassionate, and determined young man who was deeply committed to his loved ones and dedicated to achieving his goals.
The UAW Local 249 Consumer Affairs Committee stated that Datla worked at an Amoco gas station and was known to many union members. He also worked at AdventHealth while completing his studies at the University of Central Missouri.
In a social media statement, the committee expressed deep sorrow over his passing, noting that he suffered fatal injuries during a recreational skydiving trip shortly after takeoff.
The organization remembered him as a dedicated student who successfully balanced academic responsibilities and employment with exceptional determination and commitment.
The crash was one of two tragic incidents reported in Butler within three days. City officials stated that a total of 13 people lost their lives in two separate events, including the skydiving accident that claimed 12 victims.
Butler Mayor Jim Henry extended condolences to the families and friends of the victims and thanked first responders for their efforts during the emergency response.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Officials said a preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while the final report determining the probable cause of the accident could take between 12 and 24 months to complete.
