Vipin Kumar Romania rescue

Craiova, Dolj County, Romania: An Indian-origin construction worker, Vipin Kumar, has been honored by authorities in Romania after courageously rescuing a five-year-old girl who fell into a frozen lake earlier this year. In recognition of his bravery and humanitarian act, local officials awarded him honorary citizenship.

The incident occurred in January 2026 in Craiova, Romania. The young girl was visiting a park with her parents when she reportedly left her sledge and ran toward a frozen lake. The ice beneath her suddenly gave way, causing her to fall into the freezing water.

Her father immediately attempted a rescue but also became trapped in the icy conditions. Witnessing the emergency, Vipin Kumar rushed toward the lake with the help of a sledge and entered the dangerous area despite the risk to his own life.

As the ice continued to break beneath him, Vipin managed to reach the child and keep her head above water until emergency rescue teams arrived. Rescue personnel later pulled both Vipin and the girl to safety before transporting them to a hospital.

Both suffered hypothermic shock due to prolonged exposure to the extreme cold but escaped life-threatening injuries. A video of the dramatic rescue later spread widely across social media, earning Vipin praise from the public and local authorities.

Recalling the incident, Vipin said he acted without hesitation after seeing the child struggling in the water. He explained that there was no time to think and that his only focus was saving the girl's life.

Craiova Mayor Lea Olguta Vasilescu announced that Vipin would receive the title of Honorary Citizen of Craiova in recognition of his courage, selflessness, and humanitarian service. The proposal was subsequently approved by the local council. Authorities have also indicated that he will receive certain benefits, including a residence permit.

Vipin's employer in Romania has also praised his actions. The company is reportedly planning to cover travel expenses and provide air tickets so that he can visit his family in India, including his eight-year-old daughter.

Vipin Kumar moved to Romania in June 2025 and has been employed as a construction worker in the Malu Mare area of Dolj County.
