Iran Israel tensions impact oil supply at Strait of Hormuz
West Asia: Tensions have escalated once again in the West Asian region following the collapse of peace talks between Iran and the United States in Islamabad. The developments have intensified geopolitical uncertainty, raising concerns over global energy supplies and price stability.
Crude oil markets reacted sharply to the situation, with prices witnessing a significant surge. On Sunday night, oil prices jumped by nearly 11 percent, crossing $105 per barrel. U.S. WTI crude stood at approximately $104.2 per barrel, while Brent crude hovered around $101 per barrel.
The situation has become more critical around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. Reports indicate that limited oil and gas shipments through the strait have already been disrupted, raising fears of a broader supply crunch across Asian markets.
India, which depends heavily on energy imports, is expected to face significant challenges if the disruption continues. Experts warn that fuel and gas shortages may emerge in the coming weeks, particularly if shipping routes remain restricted. The United States Central Command has reportedly indicated possible naval operations in the region, further escalating tensions.
Energy analysts caution that the current geopolitical climate could have a severe impact on fuel availability and pricing. In India, petrol prices may increase by up to ₹20 per litre, while diesel could see a rise of around ₹15 per litre. Prices of CNG and domestic cooking gas are also expected to rise.
Despite the Centre’s earlier assurance of maintaining adequate reserves for up to 60 days, experts suggest that actual usable stock may only sustain demand for nearly 20 days under current conditions.
State authorities, including those in Telangana, have begun preparing contingency plans to address potential shortages. Officials are focusing on public awareness and encouraging alternative energy usage, particularly electricity, to reduce dependency on fuel.
Experts further warn that if tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel persist, India could face a significant fuel crisis within the next three weeks, with widespread economic implications.
