JD(U) Expels 16 Leaders Ahead of Bihar Elections
Patna, Bihar, India: As the Bihar Assembly elections approach, the Janata Dal (United) — led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar — is facing internal dissent. The party has expelled 16 senior members, including a sitting MLA, for engaging in what it described as anti-party behavior.
An official order issued by the JD(U) national president confirmed the expulsions. The list includes two former ministers, several ex-MLAs, and district-level presidents. Many of these leaders have reportedly decided to contest independently or join other political parties to challenge official candidates representing the NDA alliance.
JD(U) leadership characterized this rebellion as a serious breach of party discipline, stating that any action contrary to the alliance’s strategy or against NDA nominees would be treated as a violation of the party’s code of conduct.
Party sources indicated that the decision aims to restore internal order and send a strong message before the first phase of voting begins under the election code of conduct. Some expelled leaders have already filed nominations independently or on behalf of other parties.
This decisive move highlights JD(U)’s effort to preserve unity and discipline within its ranks during the high-stakes election period. However, political observers believe the expulsions could intensify the political turmoil in Bihar ahead of polling.
